Long Long Journey with Libranet 2.8.1

It was about mid August that one of my friends gave me a linux distro called Libranet. That's version was 2.8. I decided to install and test it. Before that I was a Redhat 9 and SuSE 8.1 user. I wasn't familiar with debian and apt. Libranet was my entrance to debian world. I liked it very much, So when I heard that they've released version 2.8.1, decided to email them and get a review copy. I received my copy of nice 2.8.1 disks early October.

It's installation is text based and a little complicated for newbie users. It's very easier than debian, but still needs a bit work to be easier like Anaconda and Yast installation programs. But newbie users with a small guide can install it w/o problem. I've wrote a simple 2 page installation guide and when I give 2.8.1 disks to my friends, suggest that they read it before installation. I know that they have an online installation guide, but think that it's better to include it in package.

As I wrote, installation process is text based and have a reboot after installing base system. After reboot it configures your X and starts final steps of installation. There is few scripts to configure Apache/PHP/MySQL (for web development) and to install nVidia 3D accelerated drivers.

Like other distros, there was some installation issues on some systems, but when you feel Libranet as is, you'll forget them at all!

It's more than 3 months that Libranet is my main distro and I really don't like to change it with any other one. Why? Answer is easy: That's really an excellent distro. I've installed it on more that 10 computers and now Libranet 2.8.1 is our standard desktop in office. With Libranet you have speed, power and stability of debian with new softwares. Libranet 2.8.1 is very stable system. You feel that you have a pure linux w/o any changes like SuSE theme and Redhat's bluecurve. Maybe you like bluecurve, but I prefer to use standard softwares as they are. I don't like to see a red hat instead of KDE logo.

Libranet 2.8.1 provides a useful tool called “Adminmenu”. This really ease your configuration work, specially for newbie users. This tool have 2 modes, text and graphical. So it's possible for me to configure my office workstations over SSH.
In other words, Adminmenu centralizes administration work and acts like a shortcut to other tools that you may used them before and are familiar with. You can configure everything from network to printers and even kernel with it. It also provides a section to install or download/Install Java, Flash, RealPlayer and Mozilla plugins. There are several additional tools like font installer, X configuration, sound configuration, user, disk and package managers.

It also provides a nice ppp connection tool called libranetPPP that is my default dialup software. My modem have a hardware problem and only works with this tool! Why? I don't know.

A big advantage of Libranet is its compatibility with debian. You have power of apt in your hands. You can ignore Adminmenu package manager at all! You can update your system with debian and Libranet repositories. They say that's 100% compatible with debian. Yes that's true! I upgraded a woody system with Libranet 2.8.1 disks w/o any problem and that system works perfectly.

Just before Libranet, my default OS was SuSE 8.1. You know that SuSE is a light and fast system. But when I installed Libranet, I felt that SuSE wasn't so fast!
Libranet's default desktop is IceWM. I really don't understand that why they choose it (maybe to complete it's speed pack!), and prefer to use KDE. Libranet 2.8.1 comes with KDE 3.1.3 and many other desktop managers like Gnome, Xfce and more.

What about other applications? I'm sure that Libranet can cover 95% of your application needs. You already have everything you need and rarely have to add something else. For me, it fits my 100% needs. I didn't need to download any software to complete my box. Libranet comes with tons of Office (Koffice, OpenOffice...), System (many many! Synaptic, Aptitude and more...), Multimedia (XMMS, Xine, Mplayer...), Game (KDE and Gnome games, 3D games, Flightgear...), Internet (Browsers, FTP and chat softwares....), Educational (Ktouch... ), development applications (Quanta, Kdevelop, Anjuta...), and CD Burners (K3B, XCDRoast...).

Finally, I suggest Libranet to all users from newbie to expert. Newbies can use provided perfect configuration tools and power users can do it on their way or debian way! It's a fast, stable and powerful desktop linux. Best thing I've ever seen!
